1. Pizza
2. Fried foods
3. Chocolate
4. High-fat cheeses
5. High-fat proteins (lamb, cheese, more than 2 beef meals per week)
6. Snacking on high sugary foods

If you’re overweight, how many of the foods above do you eat daily? We’d be 3 or 4. If you are serious about keeping the weight off and living a more active and healthy life, you need to remember these bad guys of the food world. Not that they are necessarily bad in themselves but they are habit forming and easy to turn to when you are rushed or stressed. No-one would say that having a pizza occasionally is harmful but when it’s part of your regular diet, then there is a concern. High fat or high-calorie foods really have no place in the diet of someone who is committed to maintaining a healthy weight, having more energy and reducing their risk of diseases such as diabetes.

We think it’s better to consider foods like those listed above as the occasional treat, not meals or regular menu items. Remember you do have options – choose low-fat cheeses (which can be delicious – think feta or ricotta); a few squares of dark chocolate rather than a bar of milk chocolate; chicken breasts or fish rather than lamb or beef; using cooking methods other than frying. Your diet can be varied and colourful and certainly doesn’t have to be bland just because you are eliminating high calorie, high fat menu items.

You may find it very helpful to keep a daily log of everything you eat – it will keep you on track. Menu planning is key as well so that you are buying and preparing the right food and less likely to just pick up some fast food on the way home.
As with most things you want to achieve, careful preparation is a valuable tool in keeping your weight off. You need to think about what you plan to eat for the week and shop accordingly. Meal planning will ensure that you are preparing food in a healthy manner. Who knows – you could even end up saving time as well as calories!
